Walter Augustyn Obituary

Walter Stanley Augustyn, 78, of Hamilton, NJ, entered into his eternal rest on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at home.  Born in Trenton, NJ, Walter was a lifelong area resident.  He attended St. Joachim’s Grammar School and was a graduate of the Class of 1963 from Cathedral.  Walt as he was affectionately known was also a member of the Cathedral track team.  In 1964 he joined the Army National Guard and after his completion of his active duty he was assigned to the 50th Armored Division and later transferred to Sea Girt, NJ.  He retired in 2004 as a Staff Sargeant after 35 years of dedicated service.  While in the National Guard he was known as Sargeant Augie.  In the 1960’s he worked alongside his father and uncle at an Italian Food Market in Chambersburg. In 1970 Walter joined the Trenton Fire Department, during his career there he was the E10 and Battalion Chief driver.  In 1999 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and retired in 2001 with 31 years of service to the City of Trenton.  He received the Broad Street National Bank for Valor in 1986.

 During the 1950’s and 1960’s he was an avid bowler. Walt enjoyed playing poker with his friends from the Evergreen community every Wednesday as well as gambling in Atlantic City on occasion.  He also enjoyed BINGO on Tuesday nights with his Evergreen friends.  

Walter loved traveling with his wife and grandchildren to NYC to see Christmas shows as well as many other dinner shows with his community friends from Evergreen.  He loved cruising the Caribbean along with his wife Carol having taken 28 cruises over the years sharing and making many good memories.  Walt also loved trips to the beach, especially Wildwood, NJ vacations with his grandchildren, Katie and Matthew sharing in many good times and memories.   In his younger years he was an avid snow skier, skiing in all the New England states as well as Colorado with his snow bunny wife, Carol and his son, Christopher at his side.  

Walter was a loving and devoted husband, father, pop-pop, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

Son of the late Stanley and Jennie (Chianese) Augustyn.  Walter is survived by his wife Carol (Ingling) Augustyn; his son Christopher Augustyn; his step-son Stephen Adzima and wife Marie; his two grandchildren whom he adored, Kaitlyn and Matthew Adzima; a brother James Augustyn and wife Maria; a sister, Joanne and husband Theodore Hamilton; as well as several nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 5, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St. Raphael’s Church, 3500 So.
