George Smith

George Phillip Smith, 72, of Hamilton, NJ, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, NJ.  He was born in Rahway, NJ on August 17, 1950 to John and Mary Smith.  George was a very hard worker as is evidenced by his long career in construction management and throughout his service in the Navy.  He was a US Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.  George worked as a construction manager building large commercial developments and building for many years and was well respected in the industry.  During his retirement years, George was a member and Vice Commander of both the Hamilton and Lawrence V.F.W.’s.  George coached youth baseball and football and was a mentor to many. George loved fishing, boating, and being out on the ocean.  He enjoyed bowling and shooting pool.  He loved nothing more than time spent with his family and his beloved grandchildren whom he loved to play with.  He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend to many.

Son of the late John and Mary (McCloskey) Smith; husband of the late Michelle (Vermilyea) Smith; brother of the late Stephen Smith; brother-in-law of the late Valerie Bollitieri; George is survived by his three children, Daniel Smith, David Smith and wife Sandra, and Marisa and husband Jim Zemanek, PhD; two grandchildren, Mason and Faye Smith; a brother, Patrick Smith and wife Geri; two brothers-in-law, Greg and Joseph Vermilyea; four sisters-in-law, Patricia and husband Bob Jobes, Lynn Caltigrone, and Christine and Marie Vermilyea; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Catholic memorial services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 3:30 PM at the Hamilton Brenna-Cellini Funeral Home, 2365 Whitehorse-Mercerville Rd., Hamilton, NJ 08619.  Family and friends may pay their respects from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the funeral home.  Cremation was held privately.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made in George’s memory to Deborah Hospital Foundation 212 Trenton Rd., Browns Mills, NJ 08015 or online at www.deborahfoundation.org  Please visit George’s tribute page at www.brennacellinifuneralhomes.com
